Face Detail Face Detail

Here we can see the face really coming alive now! I got really stuck into the detailing for the darker areas and it just pops out at you.

More Color

I've started to add more color now. HOK Oriental Blue Kandy and Violet were the main colours for the job but I also used a little yellow very carefully on the face to give it a little more realism. With the colors being transparent you will also get a subtle green where the yellow falls over the blue which will give very realistic color depth for a ghostly, demon-conjuring hell-freak!

Painting Your Nails! Painting Your Nails!

Oh yeah . . remember that point I mentioned earlier about not painting the details on the nails? Well, I lied!

To get the nail super-real I made a tiny mask with 4 overlapping pieces of tape and simply laid it carefully over each nail and sprayed a light hi-light in white. This gives the nails a real metal, sharp look adding to the 3D and realism. I then knocked the colour back a bit by laying over some transparent blue/violet to get them to 'marry' into the rest of the pallette of colors.

Looking Sharp

So, after all that xtra work it's time to revel in your efforts! The detail in Pinhead looks sharp because it was not rushed, at this point there is around 50 hrs work. That includes both the sides and the top detailed portrait.

I may sometimes spend much longer than this, it all depends on the budget and the artwork involved. Remember, we have to also make a living, even though it's the best job in the world! It is the hardest part about being creative, some people think that if you are good it must be easy, therefore it should be cheap! And second is, only a handful of customers will ever really appreciate the amount of work that has gone into a job but always, give them 100%. You're only ever as good as your last job, remember that.

All the blues and violets are done so now it's time to make this thing look real nasty . . it's time for the BLOOD!

Looking Sharp

Bloody Marvellous! Bloody Marvellous!

House of Kolor Kandy Apple Red is THE colour for blood, it even looks like blook in the paint pot! You mix Kandies with Intercoat Clear (SG100) or, you can use PPG's Clear Base Binder. If you use a slow reducer, or medium then add a bit of slow, the Kandy will flow much better and you will be able to get very fine detail which is crucial for transparent renderings in a mural.

Chatterer's Bite

You can see here that Kandies are not just for Pimping a Ride in one or 2 colors! you can treat them as an integral part of your color/paint arsenal because they are so very useful. If you have painted with oils b4 then this is similar to glazing.

You build levels of intensity of colour by layering more and more so effectively, you can acheive many shades of red by just using . . red! Click picture for a detailed image.

Chatterer's Bite

Cenobite Cenobite

The other side of the tank. It looks very bright in the photo's but it is actually darker than this until the light reflects across it (like the flash on the camera).

This is what makes kandy's so very special because they have magical properties giving them the ability to do very odd things. These sorcerous properties are only brought to the surface if you add the correct amount of reducer, take your time and put your soul into it . . moo-hoo-ha-haa-haar!

Oh yeah. . . and the moon must be full.

All Coming Together

Just a few more details towards the front of the tank and we're done. Lightning bolts to tie it all together and these will be knocked back using transparent Kandy blues.

Lightning bolts are quite simple to do freehand. Basically, put a softer white line down first and mist over with blue. Second, go back in with white and make the line tighter taking care to be more detailed and brighter where the lightning converges. Go progressively more detailed with white until you have a glowing line. You can also come back with the blues to take the 'halo' out a bit.

Rear Fender Rear Fender

The rear fender was very simple but again, effective. Using the masking chains technique I laid down some whites to get creases/movement over the masked chains and then removed to leave black links.

Lightning bolts were added and then dusted in blue & violet Kandy's. A very slim mask was then made for the chains hi-lights and this was used all over the bike to really finish it off and bring up the chains into a more a 3D look.

Finished Front Fender

Grrrr! The Kandy Apple Red and Oriental Blue/Violets work so well together and really pop. This is now ready to go off to the booth for clearing and polish.

Before I take it I give all the pieces a good clean over with a mild degreaser or HOK Post Sanding Clear (waterbased) to get rid of all finger marks etc. and then a coat of Intercoat Clear (which I also use as I am building up the layers of art to protect it). I know then it can't get fingered badly between me and the spray shop and the Intercoat will protect the artwork.

The KC20 Water-based Post Sanding Cleaner by House of Kolor is brilliant because it removes unwanted overspray and cleans the job while you're working. There is no fear of it biting into your solvent-based paint because it's water-based. Just remember, between heavy coats of Kandy Kolors you'll have to lightly wipe the areas with a tack cloth. This is a sticky cloth you can get from your automotive supplier.

Raisin' Hell! Raisin' Hell!

Ready to raise hell! Ian is the proud owner of this Valkyrie and has done extensive work to it himself. I am very proud of the way it came out and have had many comments about the quality of the portrait on the tank.

We were filmed with the bike for the Discovery Channel's UK Biker Build Off programme which is being aired in September. When I have the date I'll let you know.

I hope you have enjoyed reading through these step by steps and have as much fun trying out any of the things or simply looking through the images, as I had painting this Hell-raising beast.

Practice my friends and remember, take . . your . . time. It is always worth it in the end.

Til next time, keep on painting . . Beej
